CHARTER DAY | August 6 2015 declared a holiday in Cebu

The province of Cebu will be celebrating its 446th foundation anniversary this coming August 6, Thursday.

August 6 is a special non-working public holiday all over Cebu as stipulated by Republic Act 8952, which was enacted in 2000 during the administration of then-President and current Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada.

The law also covers the highly urbanized cities of Cebu and Mandaue as well as the component cities of Lapulapu, Danao, and Toledo. The full text of RA 8952 can be read in this link.

Even before the enactment of RA 8952, Cebuanos had been celebrating August 6 as their province’s foundation day since 1993. At that time, Cebu’s provincial council stressed that King Philip II’s appointment of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi as governor of Cebu on August 6, 1569 “marked the foundation, although loosely, of a province of Cebu.” It must be remembered that the Philippines was named after King Philip II.

Being a vote-rich province, national candidates are once more expected to make an extensive effort to win the lion’s share of Cebuanos’ support for 2016. In 2004, for example, it is widely believed that Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s one million votes from Cebu enabled her to eke out a narrow win over her chief rival Fernando Poe Jr.

On the local front, it is said that incumbent Governor Hilario Davide III will be challenged by 3rd district Rep. Gwendolyn Garcia, herself a former three-term governor.
