BLACK SATURDAY – April 16 2022 declared a special non-working holiday

President Rodrigo Duterte has declared Black Saturday, which this year falls on April 16, 2022, as a special non-working holiday.

This is stipulated in Proclamation 1236, which was released last October 2021. Proclamation 1236 lists the nationwide holidays for 2022 and it can be accessed here.

According to this proclamation, Holy Wednesday, April 13 is a regular working day while Maundy Thursday (April 14) and Good Friday (April 15) are regular holidays all over the Philippines.

According to the 2022_DOLE_Handbook_on_Workers_Statutory_Monetary_Benefits, the “no work, no pay” principle will be in effect on Black Saturday because it has been declared a special non-working holiday.

In other words, workers who are not required or permitted to work on April 16, 2022 are not entitled to any compensation unless there is a collective bargaining agreement or a company policy that provides for that.

Meanwhile, the handbook mentions that employees who work during special non-working days like Black Saturday are entitled to receive an additional pay of 30% for every hour that they render service.
