#WalangPasok – DepEd: No classes from May 2 to 13, 2022 in public schools nationwide

The Department of Education (DepEd) has declared May 2 to 13, 2022 as no-class days in all public preschool, elementary, and high schools nationwide to prepare for the 2022 national and local elections. The elections will be held on May 9, 2022.

This is stipulated in DepEd Order No. 29-2021 which was signed by Secretary Leonor Briones back in August 5, 2021. The said memorandum contained the official calendar for school year 2021-2022 which started last September 13, 2021 and will end by June 24, 2022. The Filipino Scribe wrote about this DepEd order last August.

Public school teachers serve as poll workers during elections, and they are expected to attend numerous trainings in connection to that before May 9. Public schools, meanwhile, serve as election precincts.

It is worth stressing that DepEd’s announcement only covers public schools at the basic education level. Classes in public universities and colleges are not likely to be affected by this.
