February 26 2024 declared a holiday Zamboanga City

UPDATED as of February 24, 2024

Zamboanga City will be marking its 87th Charter Day anniversary this 26 February 2024, Monday.

The occassion, which is referred to locally as Dia de Zamboanga, has been declared a special non-working holiday in the said city in Western Mindanao by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. through Proclamation 483.

Zamboanga City became a chartered city in 1937, when the Philippines was still ruled by a Commonwealth Government under then-President Manuel L. Quezon. On February 26 of that year, the so-called Asia’s Latin City had its first set of city officials.

Pay Rules for the Dia de Zamboanga holiday – February 26, 2024

According to the 2023_edition of Department and Labor and Employment’s (DOLE)_Handbook_on_Workers_Statutory_Monetary Benefits, the “no work, no pay” principle should be in effect during special non-working holidays like this year’s celebration of Zamboanga City’s foundation anniversary.

This means that workers who are not required or permitted to work in Zamboanga City on February 26 are not due to receive any compensation unless there is a collective bargaining agreement or a company policy that implements that.

The handbook likewise highlighted that employees who work during special non-working days are entitled to receive an additional pay of 30% for every hour that they render service.
