Ateneo de Davao: Boycott Cebu Pacific

Ina statement issued Monday afternoon, the president of Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) announced that the school will no longer be purchasing tickets from Cebu Pacific airline company because of its personnels’ “insensitivity and ineptness.” The statement was originally posted on the university’s Twitter account.

Father Joel Tabora, a Jesuit, is referring to the incident last June 2 when a Cebu Pacific plane  missed the runway of the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City. No one among the passengers were injured, but they complained that it took nearly half an hour before rescue teams arrived.

“Cebu Pacific passengers were ignored and neglected by your personnel last night in an hour of emergency,” Tabora said in the letter addressed to the management of the said airline company. He added that the firm’s personnel “failed to give human assistance to passengers.” “No instructions were given; no calming words spoken. Instead a pilot of another airline undertook to calm the passengers,” he said.

The Jesuit also noted that it took the company’s passengers waited for too long to hear anything from their service provider. “What if the engine had exploded? What if someone had choked due to the smoke? What if there was an emergency medical situation on the plane in those 27 minutes?” Tabora asked, pointing out that it took another hour and a half before someone from the company talked to them.

Father Joel Tabora, president of Ateneo de Davao University, has ordered his school to boycott Cebu Pacific

“I am incensed not because there was a mechanical failure last night, but because of Cebu Pacific’s manifest human failure. Where was your concern for the passengers? Your personnel lack training for an emergency situation? They froze. They did not know what to do. They must be able to put the welfare of the passengers before their own. And they must be trained to do so,” Tabora said.

Cebu Pacific has long been criticized for its frequently delayed or canceled flights and missing luggages, something that earned national attention last year because it triggered the airport brawl of celebrity couple Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago against journalist Mon Tulfo.

“When you put such people in the care of people, you endanger lives. Under these circumstances, we will generally recommend a boycott of Cebu Pacific. You do not deserve customers,” Tabora concluded.

  1. This news makes me terribly sad because I expected more from Cebu Pacific. I hope they immediately and strictly implement significant changes because it does not only reflect their lack of readiness for unexpected situations such as this but it ultimately mirrors how much they care for their loyal customers – not only Filipinos but foreigners expecting nothing but a terrific and smooth vacation in the Philippines.
