On Arianna Tiangco
During the onslaught of heavy rains triggered by the typhoon-enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat), a Twitter user who identifies herself as Arianna Tiangco (www.Twitter.com/AriannaTngco) has earned the ire of Filipino netizens after posting incendiary remarks against the Philippines. Here are some of her posts:

In response to a tweet criticizing her posts, “Arianna Tiangco” retorted that she’s not Filipino and that she’s from Italy. She also mocked her critics, saying that users from the Philippines should not “follow” her on the said micro blogging site. Her series of inflammatory posts began Monday night. Naturally, Filipinos began pushing back “Arianna Tiangco.” See this web page to see some of their reactions. Her posts had become so controversial that as of Tuesday afternoon, she’s one of the trending topics on Twitter.
But wait, is this another case of much ado over nothing? For one, is “Arianna Tiangco” a real person? According to one post, the said Twitter account stole pictures from user @xmarneyy. Check her Twitter page in this link. If one can recall, a similar incident happened during the heady days of typhoon Ondoy back in 2009.
My take: This is a useless distraction from the relief and evacuation efforts that netizens, especially those in flodded areas, should be focusing on. Indeed, in the Internet, anyone can pose to be someone else with little consequence. Nevertheless, since Internet postings get circulated at lightning speed, minor annoyances like these inadvertently divert attention away from the more important matters on hand.
Lesson: learn to ignore.
