Discussing social media anonymity on PTV 4’s “Rise and Shine Pilipinas”
I was recently invited to have a live guesting on PTV 4’s morning show “Rise and Shine” to discuss the issue of going anonymous on social media.
During the segment, I explained that social media users prefer to go anonymous because of many reasons – like their preference to protect their privacy and their desire to be able to express their political views, views, thoughts, experiences, sexual desires, etc. with minimal fear of being judged by people who know them personally.
Of course, the prevalence of anonymity on social media can have negative consequences as well. First, it is very easy to assume someone else’s identity on social media. Also, anonymous trolls are largely responsible for promoting fake news and poisoning the type of public discourse online.
I want to thank the hosts of “Rise and Shine Pilipinas” for having me: Dianne Querrer, Audrey Gorriceta, and Alfonso “Fifi” delos Santos. Special thanks too to Mary Perena, a former student who’s now working with PTV 4, for the assistance.
PS: The views and opinions I expressed during this episode does not reflect the views and opinions of my employer and other organizations I am affiliated with.
And also, I am frequently addressed as “Professor” during media appearances and though it makes me quite uncomfortable, I guess they’re doing it just out of courtesy and simplicity and to sort of build-up their guest’s credibility in the eyes of their audience.
