July 15 2014 declared a holiday in Cordillera region

The 27th foundation anniversary of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) will be celebrated this coming July 15, Tuesday.

The day is a special non-working holiday throughout the Northern Luzon region according to Proclamation 795, which Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. signed in behalf of President Benigno Aquino III last June 11. Read the full text of Proclamation 795 here.

The theme for this year’s festivity is “Boosting the Economic Competitiveness of the Cordilleras for ASEAN 2015.”

Included in CAR are the provinces of Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, and Mt. Province as well as the chartered city of Baguio.

The CAR was created in 1987 by virtue of Executive Order 220, which was signed by the late President Corazon Aquino. It was noted  the peoples of the Cordilleras wants “to be immediately granted meaningful participation in the conduct of their affairs.”

The region had been engulfed in political and social unrest especially during the authoritarian rule of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos.

Things vastly improved upon Aquino’s assumption of the presidency. In fact, the Aquino administration and the secessionist Cordillera People’s Liberation Army agreed to have a cessation of hostilities by September 1986, just seven months after the People Power Revolt.
