#WalangPasok – August 30 2016 declared a holiday in Bulacan
The province of Bulacan will lead the rest of the nation in commemorating the 166th birth anniversary of hero and propagandist Marcelo del Pilar this coming August 30, 2016.
The said occasion, which this year falls on Tuesday, is a special non-working holiday in the province as declared by Republic Act (RA) 7449. It was enacted during the time of the late former President Corazon Aquino. Read the full text of RA 7449 in this link.
As often mentioned in history books, Del Pilar is part of the triumvirate (together with Jose Rizal and Graciano Lopez-Jaena) that initiated the propaganda movement against the Spanish colonial government from the 1880s until his death in 1896.
Del Pilar is now remembered as the provincial hero of Bulacan, according to their 2007 Administrative Code.
Regarded as one of the most important journalists in the country’s history, Del Pilar used the pen names “Plaridel” and “Pupdoh,” to write essays, articles, and satirical pieces (like “Dasalan at Tocsohan”) which highlighted the abuses of Spanish government officials and even by members of the clergy. Below is an example:
“Aba Ginoong Barya”
Aba ginoong Barya
Nakapupuno ka ng alkansya
Ang Prayle ay sumasainyo
Bukod ka niyang pinagpala’t higit sa lahat
inagpala naman ang kaban mong mapasok
Santa Barya, Ina ng Deretsos,
Ipanalangin mo kaming huwag anitan ngayon at kami ipapatay.
