#BotongPinoy2022: TV ad touts Isko Moreno’s COVID-19 response in Manila

The camp of Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso has released a one-minute ad touting his response to the effects of COVID-19 pandemic in the city. The commercial has been airing on primetime for about a week now.

The ad begins with the unidentified narrator praising Domagoso’s highly-publicized efforts to clean-up popular areas in Manila like Divisoria and Quiapo. “Parang isang panaginip sa saglit na pag-idlip. Lumuwag, luminaw ang kalyeng masikip,” the narrator said.

Trahedya ng pandemya, gutom ang dala. Labing-limang araw inahon sa ayudang kahon-kahon!” the narrator added, also commending the successful initiative of the city government of Manila to build a COVID-19 field hospital in Rizal Park in only 52 days. The ad then focuses on Manila’s vaccination initiative.

The commercial strikes a proud and optimistic tone toward the end: “Ningning na nawala, muling binalik. Ang araw, sa dagat muling humalik. Matulin ang pagsikat, maliksi ang pag-usad. Ito na ang Maynila, mahal nating siyudad.” The ad closed with the tagline “Maynila: Bilis Kilos.”

Although the ad is ostensibly connected to Manila’s 450th foundation anniversary, it must be remembered that there is less than two months to go before the filing of candidacies for the 2022 national and local elections.

Domagoso is only in his first-term as mayor of Manila, and he is eligible to run for two more terms. However, he is consistently getting high ratings in presidential and vice presidential surveys. There are speculations that he might run as the running-mate of Vice President Leni Robredo or that he will run for president himself.

And in an apparent bid to have a platform for a possible run for national office, Domagoso recently joined and was subsequently elected party president of Aksyon Demokratiko.
