Mathematics month theme 2024: “Playing With Math”

The Department of Education (DepEd) did not specify a week or month for the exclusive celebration of mathematics.  This is based on the list of activities detailed in DepEd’s school calendar for the current school year 2023-2024.

Despite the lack of an official theme from DepEd, math teachers in elementary and secondary schools nationwide can consider using the theme developed by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) for the 2024 International Day of Mathematics which is simply “Playing With Math.” In the Philippines, schools are expected to celebrate Mathematics Month this January 2024.

The IMU explained through their website that the theme seeks to “celebrate mathematical games, puzzles, and other entertaining activities. The organization added that they are also “playing” with mathematics itself – exploring, experimenting, and discovering.

For Filipino educators, they can perhaps use this opportunity to learn new strategies to teach the subject and to make it more appealing to students. After all, fear of mathematics remain a common attitude among Filipino students regardless of their socio-economic background.
