#WalangPasok – April 10 2024 to be declared a holiday for Eid’l Fitr?

President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. has declared April 10, Wednesday, as a regular day in connection with the celebration of Eid’l Fitr or the end of Ramadan for Muslims. Marcos made the announcement through Proclamation 514 which was released this April 4.

Ramadan is the ninth and holiest month in the Islamic calendar and it is often described as a period of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community for Muslims all over the world.

Eid’l Fitr, the last day of Ramadan, is a regular holiday throughout the Philippines as stipulated in Republic Act (RA) 9177. This became law in 2002 during the term of then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

According to RA 9177, the National Commission for Muslim Filipinos or NCMF will have to make a recommendation to President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. regarding the final date for this year’s Eid’l Fitr based on the aforementioned moonsighting activity.

According to pay rules set by the Department of Labor and Employment, employees covered by the holiday pay rule are entitled to receive 100% of their regular daily wage rate even if they do not report for work on regular holidays like Eid’l Fitr. This daily wage rate is the sum of a worker’s daily basic wage and cost of living allowance.

Meanwhile, those who will report for work on Eid’l Fitr are entitled to get at least twice or 200% of their daily wage rate, which is more commonly referred to as “double pay.” Click here to download the 2022_DOLE_Handbook_on_Workers_Statutory_Monetary_Benefits.
