Dulaang UP (DUP), the official performing group for theater of the University of the Philippines, will kick off its 39th theatrical season later this month with “Measure for Measure.” It is an adaptation of a play written in 1604 by William Shakespeare.
DUP’s production of “Measure for Measure” (MFM) this season coincides with the global commemoration of Shakespeare’s 450th birth anniversary. MFM will also have a Filipino adaptation titled Hakbang sa Hakbang, courtesy of Ron Capinding.
Both the English and Filipino versions will be directed by Alexander Cortez, who in the past also took charge of DUP’s adaptation of Macbeth and Richard III, also by Shakespeare.
In a statement, DUP explained that MFM “is a dark comedy set in early 17th-century Vienna, a city of corruption, overindulgence, and immorality.” They further added:
“It tells the story of Duke Vincentio, a well-meaning ruler who goes undercover as a friar to observe the workings of justice in his domain. He leaves the seat of leadership to Angelo, a righteous extremist who is determined to wage war against moral offenders including Claudio.
Angelo then meets Claudio’s sister Isabella, an aspiring nun who ignites his lust and makes him question his own values. In turn, Isabella is given the impossible task of choosing between preserving the life of her brother or her own purity.”
The production staff for MFM will be lead by the following: Gino Gonzales (costumes and accessories), Faust Peneyra (set design), Meliton Roxas, Jr. (technical direction and lights), Jethro Joaquin (sound and music design), Winter David (video), Dr. Judy Ick (dramaturgy), and Erika Estacio (assistant direction).
