#WalangPasok – Work and class suspensions for September 9 2021 due to #JolinaPH

In its weather bulletin released 11:00 PM of September 8, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that tropical storm “Jolina” (international name “Conson”) is now over the coastal waters of Cabangan, Zambales (15.1°N, 119.9°E).

“Jolina” has maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 115 km/h, and central pressure of 998 hPa. It is moving northwestward at 20 kilometers per hour, with tropical cyclone winds of up to 160 kilometers from the center. It will exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Thursday night.

PAGASA likewise announced that public storm warning signals are still in effect over parts of western Luzon, particularly Region II, III, IV-A, and Metro Manila. With that, the rules for automatic class suspensions are in effect in accordance with Department of Education (DepEd) Order #14 series of 2021 as reported by The Filipino Scribe last July. DepEd clarified that the guidelines apply regardless of the learning delivery modality.

Local government units (LGUs) can also suspend classes in their respective areas as they deem appropriate. It is likely that governors and mayors will wait for the 5:00 AM weather bulletin before deciding on class suspensions. It must be reiterated that LGUs must still suspend classes as soon as possible especially since inclement weather makes Internet connectivity unstable and that it also causes power interruptions. The Filipino Scribe will be updating this post when new information becomes available.
