#WalangPasok – June 24 2024 to be declared a holiday in Manila?

The City of Manila will be celebrating its 453rd Foundation Day this June 24, Monday.

The day, which is better known as Araw ng Maynila, is expected to be declared a special non-working holiday in the nation’s capital city either by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. or by Mayor Honey Lacuna. The Filipino Scribe will be updating this post if and when new information becomes available.

Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the first Spanish governor-general of the Philippines, proclaimed Manila as the capital city of the country in June 24, 1571, calling it a “distinguished and ever loyal city” or “Ciudad Insigne y Siempre Leal” in Spanish. Quezon City, situated north of Manila, briefly became the nation’s capital city from 1948 to 1972.

June 24 is also the feast day of Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of San Juan City. During the annual Wattah Wattah festival, residents of San Juan douse water not only to their neighbors but to just about anyone.

PAY RULES FOR ARAW NG MAYNILA 2024

According to the 2022_DOLE_Handbook_on_Workers_Statutory_Monetary_Benefits, the “no work, no pay” principle will be in effect if the Araw ng Maynila is declared a special non-working holiday.

Once a formal declaration has been made, it would mean that workers who are not required or permitted to work on June 24, 2024 in Manila are not entitled to any compensation unless there is a collective bargaining agreement or a company policy that provides for that.

Meanwhile, the handbook mentions that employees who work during special non-working days are entitled to receive an additional pay of 30% for every hour that they render service.
