#BotongPinoy2022 – In latest ad, Jejomar Binay tries to sell books – and revive his political career
Former Vice President Jejomar Binay is currently running a 30-second television commercial that purportedly promotes his biography but nevertheless has all the elements of a political advertisement.
The ad begins with the narrator claiiming: “Maraming isyu ang bayan, ang solusyon – basa! Ang solusyon, nasa libro na! (The country is facing so many issues. The solution? Read! The solutions are already in the book!)” The spot then shows a copy of the biography “Dignity and Compassion: The Life Story of Jejomar C. Binay” which was written by his long-time top aide by Joey Salgado and acclaimed writer Krip Yuson.
“Marami sa problema ng bayan, meron nang solusyon!” the ad continued, showing pictures of Binay with the caption “Binay there, done that!” with a female singer chanting: “Siya lang! (“Only him!”) Ang may nagawa na at may magagawa pa!” (“Only Binay has done a lot and can do a lot more!”) which is reminiscent of his past political advertisements that highlighted his accomplishments as Mayor of Makati City for six terms.
Binay most recently served as Vice President from 2010 to 2016. Initially considered a frontrunner in the 2016 presidential race, Binay ended up placing fourth out of five major candidates. In 2019, Binay ran for congressional seat representing the first district of Makati City but unexpectedly lost to former acting Mayor Romulo “Kid” Peña Jr.
Binay remained active in national politics since then – regularly weighing in on various issues through his social media platforms and his column in Manila Bulletin. He recently indicated that he will run for Senator under the ticket of Senator Panfilo Lacson and Senate President Vicente Sotto III for the 2022 elections.
